Greece has become the latest country to launch a version of their ccTLD with non-Latin script. FORTH-ICS, registry for .gr and the new .ελ, held a Sunrise period from July 10 – October 10, with the following provisions:
— The registrant of example.gr had exclusive rights to register example.ελ
— If example.com.gr was registered, but example.gr was not, then the registrant of example.com.gr had exclusive rights to register example.ελ.
— If example.gr and example.com.gr were held by different registrants, example.ελ are blocked.
These restrictions were lifted yesterday, meaning all .ελ can now be registered on a first come, first served basis.
Although IDNs in general are still plagued with usability issues, several ccTLDs have seen a significant number of registrations. Leading the way are:
.рф – Russia – 900,000 domains registered
.台灣 – Taiwan – 500,000 domains registered
.中国 – China – 200,000 domains registered
If Greece’s .ελ hits a proportionally-high number, that would be enough to push this TLD into the range where keyword domains should have some value. Our ccTLD specialists would be happy to speak with any investors interested in registering groups of names matching this profile in the first days of GA.
